Coating materials stabilized against light-induced degradation

Claim 2

A coating material stabilised against degradation induced by light, oxygen and heat, comprising: a) a film-forming binder, b) as a stabiliser, at least one hydroxyphenyltriazine of formula I ##STR5## wherein R 1 is hydrogen or methyl, m is 1 or 2, wherein when m is 1, R 2 is a) hydrogen, b) C 1 -C 18 alkyl, c) C 1 -C 12 alkyl which is substituted by a halogen, --COOH, --COO(C 1 -C 12 alkyl) or --CN, d) C 2 -C 6 alkenyl, e) C 5 -C 8 cycloalkyl, f) C 6 -C 20 alkylcycloalkyl, g) C 7 -C 11 phenylalkyl, h) --CH 2 CO-phenyl, or i) a group --CO--R 3 , in which R 3 is C 1 -C 18 alkyl, cyclohexyl or phenyl, and when m is 2, R 2 is a) --CO--R 4 --CO--, or b) --CO--NH--R 5 --NH--CO--, in which R 4 is C 2 -C 10 alkylene, phenylene, diphenylene or C 2 -C 6 alkenylene, and R 5 is C 4 -C 10 alkylene, phenylene, tolylene, diphenylmethane or ##STR6##

Claim 3

A coating material according to claim 1, wherein component a) is selected from the group consisting of alkyd, acrylic, polyester, phenol, melamine, epoxy and polyurethane resins and mixtures thereof.

Claim 4

A coating material according to claim 1, wherein component b) is a compound of formula I, wherein R 1 is hydrogen or methyl, m is 1, R 2 is C 1 -C 18 alkyl, C 5 -C 8 cycloalkyl, C 7 -C 11 phenylalkyl, --CH 2 CO-phenyl or C 1 -C 4 alkyl which is substituted by --COO(C 1 -C 12 alkyl).

Claim 5

A coating material according to claim 1, comprising as further stabiliser a light stabiliser of the type of the sterically hindered amines.

Claim 6

A coating material according to claim 4, comprising as further stabiliser a light stabiliser which contains at least one group of formula ##STR7##

Claim 7

A coating material according to claim 1, which contains an organic solvent.

Claim 8

A coating material according to claim 1, which contains a pigment.

Claim 9

A coating material according to claim 1, which comprises 0.1 to 5% by weight of a stabiliser of formula I, based on component a).

Claim 10

A coating material according to claim 4, which comprises 0.01 to 2% by weight of a light stabiliser of the type of the sterically hindered amines, based on component a).

Claim 11

A coating material according to claim 1, which comprises as further stabiliser a light stabiliser of the type of the 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benztriazoles.

Claim 12

A coating material according to claim 1, which is an aqueous dispersion or solution of a) and b).

Claim 13

A coating material according to claim 1, which is an automotive lacquer.

Claim 14

A non-pigmented coating material according to claim 1, which is a top coat of a two-layer coating.

Claim 15

Method of stabilising a coating material against the deleterious effects of light, oxygen and heat, which method comprises adding to said coating material at least one hydroxyphenyltriazine of formula I ##STR8## wherein R 1 is hydrogen or methyl, m is 1 or 2, wherein when m is 1, R 2 is a) hydrogen, b) C 1 -C 18 alkyl, c) C 1 -C 12 alkyl which is substituted by a halogen, --COOH, --COO(C 1 -C 12 alkyl) or --CN, d) C 2 -C 6 alkenyl, e) C 5 -C 8 cycloalkyl, f) C 6 -C 20 alkylcycloalkyl, g) C 7 -C 11 phenylalkyl, h) --CH 2 CO--phenyl, or i) a group --CO--R 3 , in which R 3 is C 1 -C 18 alkyl, cyclohexyl or phenyl, and when m is 2, R 2 is a) --CO--R 4 --CO--, or b) --CO--NH--R 5 --NH--CO--, in which R 4 is C 2 -C 10 alkylene, phenylene, diphenylene or C 2 -C 6 alkenylene, and R 5 is C 4 -C 10 alkylene, phenylene, tolylene, diphenylmethane or ##STR9##

Claim 16

Method of stabilising a coating material against the deleterious effects of light, oxygen and heat, which method comprises adding to said coating material at least one hydroxyphenyltriazine of formula I ##STR8## wherein R 1 is hydrogen or methyl, m is 1 or 2, wherein when m is 1, R 2 is a) hydrogen, b) C 1 -C 18 alkyl, c) C 1 -C 12 alkyl which is substituted by a halogen, --COOH, --COO(C 1 -C 12 alkyl) or --CN, d) C 2 -C 6 alkenyl, e) C 5 -C 8 cycloalkyl, f) C 6 -C 20 alkylcycloalkyl, g) C 7 -C 11 phenylalkyl, h) --CH 2 CO--phenyl, or i) a group --CO--R 3 , in which R 3 is C 1 -C 18 alkyl, cyclohexyl or phenyl, and when m is 2, R 2 is a) --CO--R 4 --CO--, or b) --CO--NH--R 5 --NH--CO--, in which R 4 is C 2 -C 10 alkylene, phenylene, diphenylene or C 2 -C 6 alkenylene, and R 5 is C 4 -C 10 alkylene, phenylene, tolylene, diphenylmethane or ##STR9##
