Abstract

Abstract The disclosure is directed to an improved aerodynamic helmet. The helmet has a continuous aerodynamic curvilinear front, side and top surfaces whereby the fluid flowing over and around the sides of the helmet flows in a substantially continuous flow direction from the forward curved area aft of a straight area at the greatest width or largest transverse dimensions of the helmet after leaving the surface influence thereof. The continuous transverse surface around the outer periphery of the helmet at or slightly aft of the greatest width area is provided with a fluid flow termination surface or trailing edge causing the normal direction of the fluid flow around the helmet to break loose from the surface of the helmet and continue in substantially the same direction after passing the termination or trailing edge thereby preventing turbulence to the flow rather than allowing the fluid flow to follow the surface and flow around a portion of the smaller dimension back surface of the helmet before separating therefrom which creates turbulence behind the helmet and unwanted lift thereto. The improved helmet lowers wind drag compared to conventional helmet by about 40%.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 134 words
A helmet having an outer curvilinear shell surface and a front surface comprising: said outer shell surface increasing in downstream width to a maximum cross-sectional area and then diminishing in cross-sectional area rearward of said maximum cross-sectional area and said outer shell curvilinear surface terminating downstream of said maximum width and said outer shell surface downstream adjacent to said curvilinear surface termination comprises an rectilinear surface extension wherein a low pressure area is created rearwardly of the shell surface termination, openings are provided in the front surface; and at least one opening is provided through the surface rearwardly of said shell surface termination whereby air entering said openings in the front surface are drawn to the low pressure area through said at least one opening in said surface rearwardly of said shell surface termination.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 134 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 21 words
The invention as defined in claim 1 wherein said rectilinear surface extension is terminated by a downstream rectilinear helmet rear surface.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 25 words
The invention as defined in claim 2 wherein the joinder of said rectilinear surface extension and said helmet rear surface is substantially at right angles.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 24 words
The invention as defined in claim 2 wherein the joinder of said rectilinear surface extension and said helmet rear surface forms an acute angle.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 24 words
The invention as defined in claim 2 wherein the joinder of said rectilinear surface extension and said helmet rear surface forms an obtuse angle.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 36 words
The invention as defined in claim 1 wherein said rectilinear surface extension is a helmet attached band having an outer surface which is substantially a continuation of the widest width surface of said outer shell surface.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 54 words
The invention as defined in claim 1 wherein said front openings are located near the chin of the wearer and said at least one opening in the rear surface comprises a plurality of openings and said openings are spaced apart around the surface at the rear of the helmet within the low pressure area.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 30 words
The invention as defined in claim 1 wherein the front openings are located near the chin of the wearer and the rear surface has a single opening near the top.
