Abstract

Abstract A process for the production of a composition modulated alloy having a predetermined concentration is disclosed, in which alternating layers of at least two metals are successively deposited upon a substrate by electrodeposition, vacuum deposition, vapor deposition, or sputtering. The individual thicknesses of at least one metal's layers are varied in a predetermined manner. Pulsed galvanostatic electrodeposition using a tailored waveform is preferred. A copper-nickel concentration graded alloy is disclosed. Concentration graded alloys of predetermined concentration having at least one region of local homogeneity are also disclosed. The region of local homogeneity has a thickness corresponding to the thickness of two adjacent layers of different metals which have been diffusion annealed together. A pulsed electrodeposition/diffusion anneal process for production of such alloys is also disclosed. An electro-chemical deposition method is also disclosed for the production of a non-layered, continuous concentration graded alloy.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 109 words
A multilayer graded alloy having an overall thickness comprising a plurality of alternating layers of a first and a second material, said plurality of alternating layers being arranged in sets, each set comprising two adjacent layers and having a ratio of the first material layer thickness to the second material layer thickness, the ratio of the first material layer thickness to the second material layer thickness being constant in all sets, wherein individual layer thicknesses of the first material and the second material are different in each successive set, and the combined thickness of the adjacent layers of each set varies gradually over the overall thickness of the alloy.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 109 words
A multilayer graded alloy having an overall thickness comprising a plurality of alternating layers of a first and a second material, said plurality of alternating layers being arranged in sets, each set comprising two adjacent layers and having a ratio of the first material layer thickness to the second material layer thickness, the ratio of the first material layer thickness to the second material layer thickness being constant in all sets, wherein individual layer thicknesses of the first material and the second material are different in each successive set, and the combined thickness of the adjacent layers of each set varies gradually over the overall thickness of the alloy.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 16 words
The alloy of claim 1, wherein each of said first and second materials is a metal.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 32 words
The alloy of claim 2, wherein said metal is selected from the group consisting of copper, nickel, cobalt, palladium, hafnium, zirconium, gold, chromium, tin, tungsten, molybdenum, phosphorus, manganese, barium, yttrium and lanthanum.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 18 words
The alloy of claim 1, wherein one of said first and second materials comprise polymers, intermetallics or ceramics.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 25 words
The alloy of claim 1, wherein the combined thickness of the adjacent layers of each set ranges from about 30 nm to about 300 nm.
