Abstract

Abstract An implant for stimulating the vagus nerve receives commands over a radio frequency link. The implant disables a voltage convertor used in providing the stimulation signal at periodic intervals to monitor for communications attempts. The implant provides radio frequency marker pulses before providing stimulation signals of certain frequencies. During the providing of stimulation signals the implant monitors the voltage overhead present between the voltage source and the load and adjusts the overhead to a desired level. The implant changes the voltage applied to certain internal components during stimulation periods to allow full power operation during those intervals and reduced power levels at other intervals. The implant is reset by the placing a magnet in a given location in conjunction with the application of a radio frequency transmission for a given period.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 3
Claim 1
Independent Claim 147 words
An apparatus for implantation in a living organism and for communication with an external device by radio frequency transmission of a given level, comprising: a voltage converter including a switching regulator, which switching regulator in turn includes a coil for storing energy during operation of said switching regulator, such that when said switching regulator is operating, the coil produces certain levels of radio frequency signals; a radio transmission receiver having a defined sensitivity level for receiving radio frequency transmissions form the external device, wherein the level of the radio frequency signals from the regulator exceed the defined sensitivity level of the receiver, thereby interfering with said reception of the transmissions from the external device when said voltage converter is operating; and means for periodically disabling operation of said switching regulator for a predetermined interval and enabling the receiver to communicate with the external device during said interval.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 89 words
The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising: means for determining if a predetermined signal has been received by said radio transmission receiver during said interval when said switching regulator operation is disabled; and means coupled to said switching regulator for causing transmission of radio frequency signals which carry messages to the external device after said predetermined signal is received, said means for causing transmission of radio frequency signals enabling and disabling operation of said switching regulator to cause production of said radio frequency signals by said switching regulator coil.
