Abstract

Abstract An apparatus and method is disclosed for treating blood, by having the blood enter a container, in which essentially insoluble fats (or lipids) are discriminately withdrawn out of the blood as the blood flows through or rises in the container, preferably by means of a wick that is in the container, as the level of blood in the container rises around the wick, such that essentially insoluble lipids on the upper surface of the rising blood are removed from the blood, leaving behind essentially aqueous components of the blood. Clots, bone chips and the like are also removed from the blood by means of a filter.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 114 words
A method of treating blood of a patient for re-use, comprising the steps of: (a) providing a container for receiving blood from a body of the patient; (b) delivering the patient's blood to the container; and (c) removing essentially insoluble lipids from the blood in the container by contacting the blood with a lipophilic discriminating means, that discriminates between essentially insoluble lipids in the blood and essentially aqueous components of the blood that includes soluble lipids, and accumulating the essentially insoluble lipids separately from the essentially aqueous components of the blood that include soluble lipids by discriminating between said essentially insoluble lipids and said essentially aqueous components of the blood that include soluble lipids.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 26 words
The method of claim 1, wherein the step of contacting the blood includes contacting the blood with the discriminating means including said discriminating means being hydrophobic.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 19 words
The method of claim 1, including the step of distributing the essentially insoluble lipids in the lipophilic discriminating means.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 21 words
The method of claim 1, including the step of filtering blood for removal of clots, bone chips and other debris therefrom.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 104 words
A method of treating blood of a patient for reuse, comprising the steps of: (a) providing a container for receiving blood from a body of the patient; (b) delivering the patient's blood to the container; and (c) removing essentially insoluble lipids from the blood in the container by contacting the blood with a lipophilic discriminating means that discriminates between essentially insoluble lipids in the blood and essentially aqueous components of the blood, and accumulating the essentially insoluble lipids; (d) wherein the contacting of the blood with the discriminating means includes contacting the blood with a wicking means and wicking insoluble lipids from the blood.
Claim 7
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 52 words
The method of claim 5, including the step of disposing the discriminating means generally vertically in the container such that increasing levels of blood in the container present an upper surface with essentially insoluble lipids carried thereon, through which the discriminating means protrudes, above an increasing level of blood in the container.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 27 words
The method of any one of claims 6 or 5 including the step of filtering the blood for removal of clots, bone chips and other debris therefrom.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 142 words
A method of treating blood of a patient for re-use, comprising the steps of: (a) providing a container for receiving blood from a body of the patient; (b) delivering the patient's blood to the container; and (c) removing essentially insoluble lipids from the blood in the container by contacting the blood with a lipophilic discriminating means that discriminates between essentially insoluble lipids in the blood and essentially aqueous components of the blood that includes soluble lipids, and accumulating the essentially insoluble lipids separately from the essentially aqueous components of the blood that include soluble lipids by discriminating between said essentially insoluble lipids and said essentially aqueous components of the blood that include soluble lipids; (d) wherein the contacting of the blood with the discriminating means includes contacting the blood with the discriminating means having a pore size of up to 250 microns.
Claim 11
Claim 12
Independent Claim 102 words
A method of treating blood of a patient for re-use, comprising the steps of: (a) providing a container for receiving blood from a body of the patient; (b) delivering the patient's blood to the container; and (c) removing essentially insoluble lipids from the blood in the container by contacting the blood with a lipophilic discriminating means that discriminates between essentially aqueous components of the blood, and accumulating the essentially insoluble lipids; (d) wherein the contacting of the blood with the discriminating means includes contacting the blood with the discriminating means having a pore size within a range of 10 to 100 microns.
Claim 13
