Abstract

Abstract A method and apparatus for forming the locking bend on a Pittsburgh type seam used in joining the sections during assembly of box-shaped sheet metal ducts. The apparatus provides a means for securely holding the duct without the use of a mandrel to permit the sheet metal along the seam to be bent over by a forming roller moving along the seam so as to complete the joint and lock the seam.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 192 words
An apparatus for completing the formation of a Pittsburgh-type seam partially formed along one corner formed by a first side and a second side of a box-shaped rectangular duct of deformable sheet material which sides are being locked together at the corner by said seam, the completion of the seam being accomplished by bending an outwardly extending edge of the first side of the duct over and against the second side at the corner, said apparatus comprising a carrier moveable along a defined straight path, forming means combined with said carrier and movable with said carrier along said path, a supporting table having guides for guiding the carrier's movement along its defined path, holding means to securely hold the two sides of the duct in a predetermined fixed position with the outwardly extending edge of the first side positioned along the path of the forming means, and power means to advance the carrier along its defined path so that the forming means will engage the edge and bend it at approximately a right angle over and against the second side as the forming means moves along its path, thereby completing the seam.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 29 words
The apparatus of claim 1 in which the carrier includes at least one forming roller positioned to roll and bend the edge as the carrier moves along its path.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 81 words
The apparatus of claim 1 in which the carrier includes a pair of forming rollers, the first roller being positioned ahead of the second roller in the direction of advance of the carrier so as to make an initial bend of the edge through a part of the right angle, and the second roller being positioned behind the first roller so as to engage the partially bent edge to complete the bend of the edge over and against the second side.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 36 words
The apparatus of claim 3 in which the holding means includes a clamping device that grips the first side and holds it from movement as the forming means moves along its path to complete the seam.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 65 words
The apparatus of claim 4 in which support arms are spaced apart along the table and extend outwardly therefrom so as to support the first side of the duct above the table with an open space between the first side and the table between the support arms thereby providing for support of a duct that has exterior stiffeners, the stiffeners extending into said open space.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 28 words
The apparatus of claim 3 in which the holding means includes vacuum operated grippers that engage and hold the first and second sides so as to stabilize them.
