Abstract

Abstract A method is disclosed for inhibiting corrosion of a ferrous based metal in contact with an aqueous system comprising incorporating into the aqueous system an effective amount of a substituted carboxymethoxysuccinic acid selected from the group consisting of compounds having the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is --(CHOH) n CH 2 OH, --(CHOH) m CO 2 H or --(CHOH) r (CHOR')CO 2 H and R' is CH(CO 2 H)CH 2 CO 2 H; n is 1,2,3 or 4; m is 1,2,3, or 4; r is 1,2, or 3; and water soluble salts thereof.
