Abstract

Abstract A magnetic disk unit has a magnetic head and a magnetic recording medium. The magnetic head records and retrieves information to and from the magnetic recording medium. In the magnetic disk unit the magnetic head and magnetic recording medium move relative to each other; and a device sets the frictional coefficient of the magnetic head and magnetic recording medium within an intermediate range extending from a minimum frictional coefficient point to a point where the durability of the magnetic head and the magnetic recording medium is not adversely affected. The range is determined, on a Stribeck diagram which indicates the relation of a relative velocity to a frictional coefficient of the magnetic head and magnetic recording medium.
