Abstract

Abstract A cloth for polishing a prescription, plastic lens is mounted on a resilient pad having a curvature generally corresponding to that of the lens curvature. The polishing cloth clings to the pad during a vibratory polishing operation, performed with a liquid slurry. The pad is adhesively mounted on the conventional lap.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 15
Claim 1
Independent Claim 106 words
A polishing means for polishing an optical lens, said lens having a curvature, comprising: a lap; a resilient, compressible pad made of a single material fixedly mounted on the lap and having a surface with a curvature generally compatible with that of the lens; a flexible polishing cloth loosely mounted on the pad without any disparate material being fixed to the pad intermediate said pad and said cloth, such that said cloth clings to said pad by direct frictional contact when wetted with a liquid slurry, the cloth being engageable with the lens; and means for imparting relative polishing motion between the lap and the lens.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 106 words
A polishing means for polishing an optical lens, said lens having a curvature, comprising: a lap; a resilient, compressible pad made of a single material fixedly mounted on the lap and having a surface with a curvature generally compatible with that of the lens; a flexible polishing cloth loosely mounted on the pad without any disparate material being fixed to the pad intermediate said pad and said cloth, such that said cloth clings to said pad by direct frictional contact when wetted with a liquid slurry, the cloth being engageable with the lens; and means for imparting relative polishing motion between the lap and the lens.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 22 words
A polishing means as described in claim 1, in which the lap has a curvature compatible with the curvature of the lens.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 31 words
A polishing means as defined in claim 1, in which the lens has a first diameter and the resilient pad has a diameter larger than the first diameter of the lens.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 19 words
A polishing means as defined in claim 1, including adhesive means for releasably attaching the pad to the lap.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 17 words
A polishing means as defined in claim 1, in which the polishing cloth is made of felt.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 29 words
A polishing means as defined in claim 5, in which the polishing cloth has an upper surface with a layer of velvet-like material and a somewhat smoother lower surface.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 17 words
A polishing means as defined in claim 6, in which the resilient pad is made of urethane.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 15 words
A polishing means as in claim 7, including a liquid slurry applied to the lens.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 17 words
A polishing means as defined in claim 8, in which the polishing cloth is devoid of slots.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 17 words
A polishing means as defined in claim 5, in which the polishing cloth is devoid of slots.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 17 words
A polishing means as defined in claim 10, in which the resilient pad is made of urethane.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 15 words
A polishing means as in claim 11, including a liquid slurry applied to the lens.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 17 words
A polishing means as defined in claim 5, in which the resilient pad is made of urethane.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 15 words
A polishing means as in claim 13, including a liquid slurry applied to the lens.
