Abstract A process for extinguishing, preventing and controlling fires using a composition containing at least one fluoro-substituted propane selected from the group of CF 3 --CHF--CF 3 , CF 3 --CF 2 --CHF 2 , CF 3 --CFH--CF 2 H, CF 3 --CH 2 --CF 3 , CF 3 --CF 2 --CH 2 F, CHF 2 --CF 2 --CHF 2 , CF 3 --CF 2 --CHCl 2 , CHFCl--CF 2 --CClF 2 , CHF 2 --CCl 2 --CF 3 , CF 3 --CHCl--CClF 2 , CHF 2 --CF 2 --CHClF, CF 3 --CR 2 --CH 2 Cl, CClF 2 --CF 2 --CH 2 F, CF 3 --CH 2 --CClF 2 , CHClF--CR 2 --CF 3 , CHF 2 --CF 2 --CF 2 Cl, CF 3 --CHCl--CF 3 , CF 3 --CHF--CF 2 Cl, and CHF 2 --CFCl--CF 3 is disclosed. The fluoropropanes can be used in open or enclosed areas with little or no effect on the ozone in the stratosphere and with little effect on the global warming process.
