Abstract

Abstract The present invention is directed to open nozzle unit fuel injectors for injecting a metered quantity of fuel into the cylinder of an internal combustion engine, as synchronously controlled by a drive train, wherein the unit fuel injector comprises an injector body with a reciprocably movable plunger assembly disposed therein. The present invention is more specifically directed to a high pressure open nozzle unit fuel injector including a mechanism for injecting fuel at SAC pressures of 30,000 psi or more. Moreover, the plunger assembly comprises a two-piece plunger with a variable timing chamber and a timing plunger inbetween the upper and lower plungers. Additionally, the lower plunger includes an articulated tip which is movable axially by a small degree with respect to a lower portion of the lower plunger such that trapped fuel volume pressure within the unit injector metering chamber just after injection can be beneficially used to hold the articulated tip in sealing engagement with its cup seat to effectively close off the injection orifices and prevent secondary injection. At the same time, the over-travel experienced within the upper plunger as driven by the drive train is absorbed by the timing mechanism such that the articulated tip does not experience the over-travel.
