Abstract
Abstract Biodegradable polyamides, useful as absorbable sutures and as controlled release binder materials, are prepared by condensing 4,4'-spirobibutyrolactone with a primary diamine, optionally in the presence of a nylon salt, leading to homopolymers containing lactam structural units, or to random copolymers.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim
147 words
A controlled release formulation comprising an organic polymer and an effective amount of a therapeutic drug, wherein the structural formula of said polymer includes a backbone containing n biradical units of the formula ##STR5## joined randomly with m biradical units of the formula ##STR6## wherein n is a positive integer; m is either zero or a positive integer; each R independently is a hydrocarbon radical; X 1 is --OH and Y 1 is --H, or X 1 and Y 1 together constitute a chemical bond in a lactam ring; X 2 is --OH and Y 2 is --H, or X 2 and Y 2 together constitute a chemical bond in a lactam ring; said backbone being capped with a radical selected from ##STR7## --NH 2 , or ##STR8## when m is a positive integer; with the proviso that the polymer contains lactam units when m is zero.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
13 words
A controlled release formulation of claim 1 wherein said therapeutic drug is progesterone.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
13 words
A controlled release formulation of claim 1 wherein said therapeutic drug is insulin.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
17 words
A controlled release formulation of claim 1 wherein m is zero and the polymer is a homopolymer.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
19 words
A controlled release formulation of claim 1 wherein m is a positive integer and the polymer is a copolymer.
