Abstract

Abstract A copolymer of an α-olefin with an aromatic diolefin such as divinylbenzene produced by means of Ziegler-Natta polymerization and having a vinylphenyl moiety is subjected to polymerization with an ethylenically unsaturated monomer by means of anion polymerization or free radical polymerization, whereby a graft-modified α-olefin copolymer is obtained.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 168 words
A process for producing a graft-modified α-olefin copolymer, which comprises the following step (a) and step (b): Step (a): the step of copolymerizing with the use of a Ziegler-Natta catalyst on an α-olefin having 2 to 20 carbon atoms with a dialkenylbenzene represented by the formula: ##STR7## Wherein, R 1 represents a methyl group or a hydrogen atom, R 2 represents a hydrocarbyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms and n represents 0 or 1; and Step (b): the step of graft-polymerizing by a radical polymerization a radical polymerizable monomer onto said olefin copolymer obtained in the step (a); thereby to produce a graft-modified α-olefin copolymer having a gel content of 5% or less, the gel content being determined by a method wherein the graft-modified olefin copolymer is subjected, after bromine is added to it to saturate the unreacted alkenyl groups not used for the graft reaction, to the Soxhlet's extraction by use of xylene, and the residual amount after extraction is defined as the gel content.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 168 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 22 words
The process according to claim 1, wherein the α-olefin is a straight or branched aliphatic α-olefin having 2 to 8 carbon atoms.

Claim 6
Dependent Claim 27 words
The process according to claim 4, wherein the compound of a metal of the groups IV to VI of the Periodic Table is a compound of titanium.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 22 words
The process according to claim 1, wherein the organometallic compound is selected from organometallic compounds of lithium and organometallic compounds of aluminum.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 25 words
The process according to claim 1, wherein a copolymer with a dialkenylbenzene content of 0.001 to 10% by weight is obtained by the step (a).
