Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 20 words
A crosslinked polyaromatic polymer fiber having a macronet structure and a surface area of at least 100 m 2 /g.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 20 words
A crosslinked polyaromatic polymer fiber having a macronet structure and a surface area of at least 100 m 2 /g.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 33 words
The fiber of claim 1 wherein the polyaromatic polymer forms the matrix fiber of a heterogeneous polymer fiber, and wherein a plurality of fibers of polyolefin are imbedded longitudinally in the matrix fiber.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 19 words
The fiber of claim 1 wherein the polyaromatic polymer is selected from the group consisting of poly(styrene) and poly(alpha-methylstyrene).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 18 words
The fiber of claim 2 wherein the polyolefin is selected from the group consisting of polypropylene and polybutenes.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 18 words
The fiber of claim 3 wherein the fiber possesses chemical functionality suitable for adsorptive, organic-reactive or ion-exchange phenomena.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 11 words
The fiber of claim 5 wherein the functionality is ion-exchange functionality.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 11 words
The fiber of claim 6 wherein the functionality is cation-exchange functionality.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 12 words
The fiber of claim 7 wherein the functionality is sulfonic acid functionality.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 67 words
A crosslinked polyaromatic polymer fiber having a macronet structure and a surface area of at least 100 m 2 /g, prepared by swelling the fiber in a swelling agent for the crosslinked polymer, which swelling agent is removable, does not deactivate Friedel-Crafts catalysts and does not interfere with the formation of a macronet structure, and subsequently introducing additional crosslinking into the polymer to stabilize its swollen structure.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 67 words
A crosslinked polyaromatic polymer fiber having a macronet structure and a surface area of at least 100 m 2 /g, prepared by swelling the fiber in a swelling agent for the crosslinked polymer, which swelling agent is removable, does not deactivate Friedel-Crafts catalysts and does not interfere with the formation of a macronet structure, and subsequently introducing additional crosslinking into the polymer to stabilize its swollen structure.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 17 words
The fiber of claim 9 wherein the swelling agent is removed subsequent to introducing the additional crosslinking.
