Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 16
Claim 1
Independent Claim
123 words
A method of removing, reducing or detoxifying organic pollutants or removing or killing microorganisms from a fluid, comprising bringing such fluid into contact with a photoreactive metal semiconductor material bonded with, to or into surfaces of a porous substrate including surfaces on opposite faces of said substrate, said substrate comprising base material through which the fluid can flow in intimate contact with the photoreactive material, said substrate being at least partially transparent to light at a wavelength to which the photoreactive material photoreacts, while directing light of said wavelength from a source onto the substrate to activate the photoreactive material so that part of said light passes through the substrate to activate the photoreactive material on substrate surfaces remote from the light source.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
44 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein said transparency is a result of at least one of (a) the base material being substantially transparent to light at said wavelength, and (b) the porous nature of the substrate that permits the transmission of light therethrough.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
26 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein the substrate comprises a plurality of superposed layers of said base material in the form of an open mesh.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
23 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein the substrate comprises an open mesh of said base material wound into a cylindrical, multi-convolution sleeve.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
12 words
A method according to claim 4, wherein the base material is fiberglass.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
12 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein the photoreactive material is anatase.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
24 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein the photoreactive material is selected from CdS, CdSe, ZnO 2 , WO 3 and SnO 2 .
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
34 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein the substrate comprises at least one porous tube coated with said photoreactive material, said tube being of perforated glass or in the form of a perforated film.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
24 words
A method according to claim 8, wherein said substrate comprises at least two coaxial tubes of film or glass coated with said photoreactive material.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
26 words
A method according to claim 9, wherein the base material is at least partially transparent to light at a wavelength to which the semiconductor material photoreacts.
Claim 12
Independent Claim
134 words
A method of removing, reducing or detoxifying organic pollutants or removing or killing microorganisms from a fluid, comprising bringing such fluid into contact with a photoreactive metal semiconductor material bonded with, to or into surfaces of a substrate including surfaces on opposite faces of said substrate, said substrate having the form of a plurality of layers of a base material, at least one of said layers being at least partially transparent to light at a wavelength to which the photoreactive material photoreacts, while directing light of said wavelength from a source onto the substrate to activate the photoreactive material so that part of said light passes through the substrate to activate the photoreactive material on layers of the substrate remote from the light source and surfaces of the substrate remote from the light source.
Claim 13
Claim 14
Dependent Claim
43 words
A method according to claim 11, wherein said transparency is a result of at least one of (a) the base material being substantially transparent to light at said wavelength, and (b) the layer having a porous nature permitting the transmission of light therethrough.
