Abstract
Abstract A decoding apparatus for decoding encoded image data includes a decoding circuit for decoding encoded image data, a post-processing circuit including e.g., smoothing and edge emphasis circuits for respectively performing smoothing and edge emphasis on the image data decoded by the decoding circuit, and a selector for selecting the smoothing the edge emphasis circuit in accordance with the image data decoded by the decoding circuit. For example, the selector can select between the smoothing and edge emphasis circuit based on whether or not the decoded image data is detected to have suffered deterioration or degradation as a result of the encoding/decoding of it.
