A method for preparing the antimicrobial hydroxyapatite powder of claim 1, comprising adding a calcium chloride solution to a solution containing disodium monohydrogen phosphate and at least one silver salt to form a precipitate of hydroxyapatite containing silver ions, collecting and washing the precipitate, and thereafter drying and crushing the precipitate to form said powder.
