Abstract

Abstract A catheter for introduction into the vascular system of an animal is disclosed comprising: a tubular member with a proximal and distal end and an inner and outer surface, the outer surface provided with an inflatable steering means, the inner surface defining a passage, the passage provided with a guide wire; and a control means operably linked to the inflatable steering means for selectively inflating same, said control means inflating said inflatable steering means to align said tubular member toward a selected branch of the vascular system, said guide wire being directed through the passage into said selected branch of said vascular system and said tubular member being advanced over the guide wire into said selected branch of the vascular system.

Claim 2
Dependent Claim 120 words
A steerable catheter for introduction into the vascular system of an animal comprising: a tubular member with a proximal and distal end and an inner and outer surface, the outer surface provided with an inflatable steering means, the inner surface defining a passage, the passage provided with a guide wire; and a control means operably linked to the inflatable steering means for selectively inflating same, said control means inflating said inflatable steering means to align said tubular member toward a selected branch of the vascular system, said guide wire being directed through the passage into said selected branch of said vascular system and said tubular member being advanced over the guide wire into said selected branch of the vascular system.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 43 words
A catheter according to claim 1, wherein the inflatable steering means is a plurality of aiming balloons on the outer surface of the tubular member connected to a plurality of control tubes located between the inner and outer surfaces of the tubular member.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 20 words
A catheter according to claim 2, wherein the aiming balloons are positioned at the distal end of the tubular member.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 16 words
A catheter according to claim 3, wherein the aiming balloons are arranged in two spaced groups.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 19 words
A catheter according to claim 4, wherein the two spaced groups are positioned in direct alignment with each other.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 23 words
A catheter according to claim 4, wherein the two spaced groups are offset from each other by an angle of about 45 degrees.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 17 words
A catheter according to claim 4, wherein each of the two spaced groups include diametrically opposed balloons.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 16 words
A catheter according to claim 7, wherein the passage further comprises a plurality of working channels.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 18 words
A catheter according to claim 8, wherein the distal end of the tubular member further comprises a tip.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 14 words
A catheter according to claim 9, wherein the tip further comprises a radio-opaque marker.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 19 words
A catheter according to claim 10, wherein the control means is a servo pump operably attached to a microprocessor.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 16 words
A catheter according to claim 11, wherein the control means further comprises a joy stick mechanism.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 19 words
A catheter according to claim 12, wherein the working channels include instruments to remove blockages in the vascular system.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 19 words
A catheter according to claim 12, wherein the working channels include fiberoptic light bundles for viewing the vascular system.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 14 words
A catheter according to claim 9, wherein the tip further comprises an ultrasound crystal.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 35 words
A catheter according to claim 15, wherein the ultrasound crystal is operably connected to an ultrasound unit, whereby the position of the catheter tip may be determined relative to a wall of the vascular system.
Claim 18
Independent Claim 101 words
A method of steering a catheter comprising the steps of: (a) inserting a tubular member into a vascular system; (b) inflating an inflatable steering means provided on an outer surface of the tubular member having a proximal end and a distal end and an inner and an outer surface to deflect a catheter tip towards a desired direction in the vascular system; (c) directing a guide wire through a passage defined by the inner surface into the desired branch of the vascular system; and (d) advancing the tubular member over the guide wire into the desired branch of the vascular system.
Claim 19
Independent Claim 101 words
A method of steering a catheter comprising the steps of: (a) inserting a tubular member into a vascular system; (b) inflating an inflatable steering means provided on an outer surface of the tubular member having a proximal end and a distal end and an inner and an outer surface to deflect a catheter tip towards a desired direction in the vascular system; (c) directing a guide wire through a passage defined by the inner surface into the desired branch of the vascular system; and (d) advancing the tubular member over the guide wire into the desired branch of the vascular system.
