Abstract

Abstract A one piece needle and suture holder is described in which a rounded channel is formed for retention of the suture. One end of the suture exits the channel toward the interior of the channel and is attached to a needle located in a needle holder in the interior of the channel. The channel is formed with an open side, to which are attached a plurality of hinged doors. After the suture is wound in the open channel, the doors are folded over the open side of the channel and are locked in place to retain the suture within the channel. In an alternative embodiment a paper cover is utilized to complete the enclosing channel. To afford ease of winding the suture the bottom of the channel is perforated for the application of a vacuum to the channel during suture winding. Also disclosed is a needle park for retaining the needle in the center of the package. In a preferred embodiment the needle park is backed by a relief flap to enable the needle to be conveniently grasped by a forceps during removal of the needle and suture.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 17
Claim 1
Independent Claim 50 words
A suture package defining major surfaces of a suture winding channel and comprising: a plurality of door means hingingly attached to said suture winding channel, said door means being closeable to enclose a suture within said suture winding channel; and means for locking said door means in their closed position.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 50 words
A suture package defining major surfaces of a suture winding channel and comprising: a plurality of door means hingingly attached to said suture winding channel, said door means being closeable to enclose a suture within said suture winding channel; and means for locking said door means in their closed position.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 31 words
The suture package of claim 1, wherein said suture package further comprises a closed suture winding channel with a central area having a point of access to said suture winding channel.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 34 words
The suture package of claim 2, further comprising a needle holder located in said central area and wherein said point of access allows passage of a suture from said central area into said channel.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 46 words
The suture package of claim 3, wherein said suture winding channel comprises two substantially straight opposing sections connected by opposing semicircular end sections, and wherein said point of access is located in the vicinity of the connection of a semicircular section to a substantially straight section.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 23 words
The suture package of claim 4, wherein said point of access comprises an opening in the inner wall of said suture winding channel.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 61 words
The suture package of claim 3, further comprising; a curved needle located in said needle holder with the ends of said needle curving away from said point of access; and a suture attached to the barrel of said curved needle and forming a loop extending from said barrel away from the point of said needle and into said point of access.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 54 words
The suture package of claim 1, wherein said suture winding channel is located about the periphery of a central area of said package, said suture winding channel has an open side, and said door means are hingingly attached at said open side of said channel for closure over said open side of said channel.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 22 words
The suture package of claim 7, wherein said locking means comprises a latch mechanism located on said door means and said channel.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 26 words
The suture package of claim 8, wherein said latch mechanism includes an aperture located in said door means and an interlocking post located on said channel.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 29 words
The suture package of claim 9, wherein said door means further includes fin means projecting from said door means for preventing binding of a suture within said latch mechanism.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 28 words
The suture package of claim 9, wherein said channel further includes standoff means projecting from an inner wall of said channel for bridging sections of said inner wall.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 51 words
The suture package of claim 1, wherein said suture winding channel is located about the periphery of said package and includes an inner wall projecting from the floor of said package and an opposing outer edge, and wherein said door means are hingingly attached about said outer edge of said channel.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 29 words
The suture package of claim 12, wherein said suture winding channel further includes a curved section extending outward from the base of said inner wall to said outer edge.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 56 words
The suture package of claim 13, wherein said suture winding channel in cross-section comprises a substantially planar inner wall, a planar top wall formed by said door means, and a curved wall connecting said inner and top walls when said door means are closed, wherein portions of said channel are open intermediate said closed door means.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 49 words
The suture package of claim 12 wherein an edge of said door means overhangs the inside of said inner wall upon closure of said door means, and further comprising: a perforated cover attached to said package by tabs extending therefrom and engaging the overhanging edge of said door means.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 30 words
The suture package of claim 15, wherein said perforated cover further includes a tear score line enabling said cover to preferentially open to reveal a needle location within said package.
