Abstract
Abstract A liquid crystal display device of negative display type comprises a liquid crystal cell comprising a nematic liquid crystal layer sandwiched between substrates provided with electrodes, a color filter and a light shielding layer, which is in a relation of complementary color to the color filter, covering other than the area corresponding to a display pattern, a pair of polarizing films arranged at both surfaces of the liquid crystal cell, and a driving means for applying a voltage to the electrodes. The driving means may be so adapted to apply a voltage sufficient to energize the nematic liquid crystal to the electrodes for the area of display pattern other than a desired display pattern.
