Abstract

Abstract An apparatus for recording and reproducing digital signals using a helical scan in which a drum of reduced diameter is employed without changing the tape format. Two heads are mounted on a drum at the same height in opposition to each other with a product of the diameter D of the drum and the wrap-around angle of the tape with respect to the rotary drum being constant while the speed of the drum is increased to a speed N times higher than a predetermined speed. One of the heads is mounted higher than the other by a distance of (1-1/N)P to provide a step, and the other head being is mounted at a position an angle behind the position at which the other head directly opposes the one of the heads, which angle is defined by: ##EQU1## where L is the track length in the tape format used when the rotary drum rotates at the predetermined rotational speed, Θ is the track angle, P is the track pitch, and C is a constant dependent on the drum diameter D and the wrap-around angle. Methods for performing high speed searches with this apparatus are also disclosed.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 4
Claim 1
Independent Claim 179 words
An apparatus for recording and reproducing digital signals using a helical scan, comprising: a rotary drum; and two heads mounted on said drum at the same height in opposition to each other, a product of the diameter D of said drum and a wrap-around angle of a storage medium with respect to said rotary drum being constant while a rotational speed of said drum is increased to a rotational speed N times higher than a predetermined rotational speed, one of said two heads being mounted higher than the other by a distance of (1-1/N)P to provide a step, and the other head being mounted at a position an angle behind a position at which the other head directly opposes the one of the heads, said angle being defined by the following equation: ##EQU5## where L is a track length in a tape format obtained when said rotary drum rotates at said predetermined rotational speed, Θ is a track angle, P is a track pitch, and C is a constant dependent on said drum diameter D and said wrap-around angle.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 16 words
The recording and reproducing apparatus of claim 1, wherein said wrap-around angle is approximately 180 degrees.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 19 words
The recording and reproducing apparatus of claim 2, wherein said angle defined by said equation is approximately 0.465 degrees.
