Abstract

Abstract 2-way and 3-way catalyst compositions comprising tin(IV) oxide (SnO 2 ) and chromium(VI) oxide (CrO 3 ) are disclosed for use in catalytic converters for vehicle exhaust gas systems, such catalyst compositions being effective in the catalytic oxidation of carbon monoxide and unburnt hydrocarbons, and in the catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides contained in the vehicle exhaust.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 101 words
A method for the catalytic oxidation of carbon monoxide and unburnt hydrocarbon components of vehicle exhaust gas streams, which comprises using as the catalyst a mixed oxide catalyst composition consisting of tin (IV) oxide (SnO 2 ) and chromium (VI) oxide (CrO 3 ) free from platinum and other noble metals or noble metal oxides, and containing a Sn:Cr weight ratio (calculated as SnO 2 :CrO 3 ) in the range of 1:99 to 99:1, said catalyst composition having been obtained by impregnating tin (IV) oxide (SnO 2 ) with chromium (VI) oxide (CrO 3 ) and calcining the resulting product.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 20 words
The method according to claim 1, wherein: (a) said Sn:Cr weight ratio is in the range of 2:3 to 9:1.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 20 words
The method according to claim 1, wherein: (a) said Sn:Cr weight ratio is in the range of 3:2 to 3:1.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 23 words
The method of according to claim 1, wherein: (a) the resulting product is obtained by impregnating tin (IV) oxide with aqueous chromic acid.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 24 words
The method according to claim 1, wherein: (a) the resulting product is obtained by treating a tin (IV) oxide sol with aqueous chromic acid.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 42 words
The method according to claim 1, wherein: (a) the catalyst composition consisting of the calcined mixture of tin (IV) oxide and chromium (VI) oxide free from platinum or other noble metals or noble metal oxides is dispersed on a catalyst support material.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 14 words
The method according to claim 6, wherein: (a) the catalyst support material comprises alumina.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 21 words
The method according to claim 6, wherein: (a) the catalyst support material comprises alumina coated on a ceramic or metal base.
