Abstract

Abstract A liquid crystal device (5) having smectic phase liquid crystal material in two transparent states of differing molecular orientation, each state presenting a different refractive index to polarized light transmitted therethrough, may be utilized to perform various optical functions. For example, switchable waveguides (6, 7) a ring resonator or a diffraction grating may be produced by appropriate arrangement of the material in the two states.
