Abstract
Abstract An improved liquid crystal device and manufacturing method for same are described. In the device, a pair of substrates, between which a liquid crystal layer is disposed, is joined with pillars inbetween functioning as spacers which are provided of photocurable resin by photolithography. With this structure, the spacers can be in surface contact with the inside surfaces of the substrates on which electrode arrangement and active devices are formed.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim
84 words
A method for manufacturing a liquid crystal device comprising the step of: forming electrode arrangement on the inside surfaces of a pair of substrates; coating the inside surface of one of said substrate with photocurable resin; exposing the photocurable resin coating to illumination except for the portions to be pillars and sealing member through a mask; removing the uncured portion of said photocurable resin with a solvent; and joining and uniting said pair of substrates; disposing a liquid crystal between said pair of substrates.
Claim 2
Independent Claim
84 words
A method for manufacturing a liquid crystal device comprising the step of: forming electrode arrangement on the inside surfaces of a pair of substrates; coating the inside surface of one of said substrate with photocurable resin; exposing the photocurable resin coating to illumination except for the portions to be pillars and sealing member through a mask; removing the uncured portion of said photocurable resin with a solvent; and joining and uniting said pair of substrates; disposing a liquid crystal between said pair of substrates.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
21 words
A method of claim 1 further comprising a step of blowing away said solvent from said substrate after said removing step.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
13 words
A method of claim 1 wherein said resin is a thermal curable resin.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
12 words
A method of claim 3 wherein said resin is an epoxy adhesive.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
18 words
A method of claim 1 wherein the distance between said pair of substrates is less than 3 microns.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
14 words
A method of claim 5 wherein said liquid crystal is a ferroelectric liquid crystal.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
11 words
A method of claim 5 wherein said distance is 2.2±0.5 microns.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
20 words
A method of claim 1 further comprising a step of prebaking said substrates which are united by said united step.
