Abstract

Abstract A method of making thermal insulating products comprising porous, lightweight, high temperature resistant inorganic particles in a polyimide foam matrix and the product thereof. A polyimide precursor provided is mixed with about equal weight of flake-like porous inorganic particles to substantially uniformly coat the particles with powder. The mixture is placed in a mold and compressed slightly. The assembly is heated to the foaming temperature of the polyimide precursor for a period suitable to produce uniform foaming. Then the temperature is raised to the curing and crosslinking temperature of the precursor for a time period sufficient to produce complete cure. A high temperature and flame resistant, light weight, highly insulating product results. If desired, protective sheets of material may be bonded to selected product surfaces during or after the molding operation.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 149 words
The method of making shaped thermal insulation products which comprises the steps of: providing a quantity of foamable polyimide precursor powder; mixing therewith from about 50 to 150 wt % porous, lightweight, high temperature resistant inorganic particles, based on powder weight, until said particles are substantially uniformly coated with said powder; said inorganic particles being flake-like, having a least dimension of from about 1/32 to 1/16 inch and greatest dimension of about 1/4 to 3/8 inch; pouring said mixture into an open mold; compressing the filled mold contents by about 2 to 5%; closing the mold; heating said filled mold to the foaming temperature of the polyimide precursor powder for a period sufficient to allow substantially complete spontaneous foaming to occur; increasing the temperature of the filled mold to a temperature sufficient to cure said precursor to a polyimide; and removing the resulting bonded insulation product from the mold.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 29 words
The method according to claim 1 wherein said foaming temperature is from about 275° F. to 400° F. and the foaming period is from about 10 to 40 minutes.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 27 words
The method according to claim 1 wherein said curing temperature is from about 400° F. to 650° F. and curing period is at least about 1 hour.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 28 words
The method according to claim 1 further including the step of settling the contents of the mold after pouring of the mixture thereinto by vibrating the filled mold.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 34 words
The method according to claim 1 further including the step of settling the contents of the mold after pouring of the mixture by tamping the surface of the mixture prior to closing the mold.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 42 words
The method according to claim 1 further including the step of removing dust an undersize particles from said inorganic particles selected from the group consisting of expanded vermiculite, expanded perlite, pumice or mixtures thereof prior to mixing with the polyimide precursor powder.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 23 words
The method according to claim 1 further including the step of drying said inorganic particles prior to mixing with the polyimide precursor powder.
