Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim 100 words
An apparatus for binding a set of sheets by applying a tape having adhesive thereon to the spine of the set of sheets, including: a heated member; means for detecting the thickness of the set of sheets; a spring operatively associated with said heated member; and means, responsive to said detecting means, for compressing said spring a distance dependent upon the detected thickness of the set of sheets so that said spring presses said heated member against the tape with a force dependent upon the detected thickness of the set of sheets to optimize adhesive melt and flow for binding.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 100 words
An apparatus for binding a set of sheets by applying a tape having adhesive thereon to the spine of the set of sheets, including: a heated member; means for detecting the thickness of the set of sheets; a spring operatively associated with said heated member; and means, responsive to said detecting means, for compressing said spring a distance dependent upon the detected thickness of the set of sheets so that said spring presses said heated member against the tape with a force dependent upon the detected thickness of the set of sheets to optimize adhesive melt and flow for binding.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 13 words
An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said spring is a torsion spring.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 35 words
An apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said compressing means includes a motor coupled to said torsion spring to rotate said torsion spring through a preselected angle to apply the preselected force on said member.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 41 words
An apparatus according to claim 3, wherein said compressing means includes means, interposed between said motor and said spring, for rotating said torsion spring with said torsion spring rotating through an angle less than the angle that said motor rotates through.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 45 words
An apparatus according to claim 4, wherein said rotating means includes a pair of worm gears meshing with one another and having a reduction ratio so that the angle that said torsion spring rotates through is less than the angle that said motor rotates through.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 14 words
An apparatus according to claim 5, wherein said heated member includes a heated plate.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 126 words
An electrophotographic printing machine of the type in which successive copy sheets having indicia recorded thereon are compiled into sets and the sheets of each set are bound together by applying a tape having adhesive thereon to the spine of the set of sheets, wherein the improved binding apparatus includes: a heated member; means for detecting the thickness of the set of sheets; a spring operatively associated with said heated member; and means, responsive to said detecting means, for compressing said spring a distance dependent upon the detected thickness of the set of sheets so that said spring presses said heated member against the tape with a force dependent upon the detected thickness of the set of sheets to optimize adhesive melt and flow for binding.
Claim 9
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 14 words
A printing machine according to claim 7, wherein said spring is a torsion spring.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 36 words
A printing machine according to claim 8, wherein said compressing means includes a motor coupled to said torsion spring to rotate said torsion spring through a preselected angle to apply the preselected force on said member.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 42 words
A printing machine according to claim 9, wherein said compressing means includes means, interposed between said motor and said spring, for rotating said torsion spring with said torsion spring rotating through an angle less than the angle that said motor rotates through.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 46 words
A printing machine according to claim 10, wherein said rotating means includes a pair of worm gears meshing with one another and having a reduction ratio so that the angle that said torsion spring rotates through is less than the angle that said motor rotates through.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 15 words
A printing machine according to claim 11, wherein said heated member includes a heated plate.
