Abstract
Abstract Method of producing precision shaped apertures in glass is shown. A hollow glass member defining a longitudinal aperture is provided. A carbon graphite member is shaped externally to a desired shape, disposed within the longitudinal aperture in the glass member, which member is thereafter collapsed about the graphite member taking its shape and size. The graphite member is removed leaving the glass member with a precision aperture therein.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim
108 words
A method of forming a shaped, hollow member comprising the steps of: providing a hollow glass member having a substantially circular elongated aperture along its longitudinal axis, providing a longitudinal carbon member having a predetermined desired cross-sectional shape, disposing said carbon member within said circular elongated aperture of said hollow glass member, heating the assembly so formed to the softening point of said glass member, placing the interior of said hollow glass member under vacuum, collapsing said glass member around said carbon member whereby the elongated interior aperture of said glass member assumes the shape of the exterior of said carbon member, and thereafter, removing said carbon member.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
11 words
The method of claim 1 wherein said carbon is carbon graphite.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
11 words
The method of claim 2 wherein said carbon member is hollow.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
16 words
The method of claim 3 wherein said carbon member is removed by oxidation of said graphite.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
24 words
The method of claim 4 further comprising the step of flowing an oxygen containing gas through said hollow carbon member while removing said member.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
19 words
The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of drawing said glass member to a predetermined desired size.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
48 words
The method of claim 1 further comprising the steps of: providing a heating means, and traversing said assembly through said heating means whereby so that the glass member is collapsed onto said carbon member in a substantially continuous manner as said assembly is traversed through said heating means.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
25 words
The method of claim 7 wherein the shape of the aperture remaining in said glass member after removal of said carbon member is substantially rectangular.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
25 words
The method of claim 7 wherein the shape of the aperture remaining in said glass member after removal of said carbon member is substantially triangular.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
26 words
The method of claim 7 wherein the shape of the aperture remaining in said glass member after removal of said carbon member is a complex shape.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
9 words
The article made by the method of claim 1.
