Abstract

Abstract A method of ventilating an air breathing animal at a high frequency. A flow of gas is supplied to the first side of a piston mounted within a housing while the flow of gas out of the housing is restricted to elevate the pressure on the first side of the piston. A flow of gas is also supplied to the second side of the piston, which is connected to an air breathing animal, while the piston is alternately moved back and forth within the housing at a selected frequency, amplitude and period, thereby alternately forcing gas into and drawing gas out of the animal. The flow of gas out of the animal is also restricted to elevate the pressure on the second side of the piston. The flow of gas to the first side of the piston both cools the piston and housing and helps to equalize the pressures on both sides of the piston, helping to insure accurate conversion of the mechanical movement of the piston into a pressure wave in the gas on the second side of the piston.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 15
Claim 1
Independent Claim 130 words
A method of ventilating an air breathing animal comprising: supplying a flow of gas to the first side of a piston mounted within a housing; restricting the flow of gas supplied to the first side of the piston out of the housing to elevate the pressure on the first side of the piston; supplying a flow of gas to the second side of the piston, the second side of the piston being connected to an air breathing animal, while the piston is alternately moved back and forth within the housing at a selected frequency, amplitude and period, thereby alternately forcing gas into and drawing gas out of the animal; and restricting the flow of gas out of the animal to elevate the pressure on the second side of the piston.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 39 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the flow of gas out of the housing is increasingly restricted to elevate the pressure on the first side of the piston as the pressure on the second side of the piston increases.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 37 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the pressure on the first side of the piston is elevated to a pressure approximately 10-15 cm H 2 O lower than the pressure on the second side of the piston.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 28 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the pressure on the first side of the piston is elevated to from about 3 to about 30 cm H 2 O.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 33 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the flow of gas supplied to the first side of the piston is supplied at a rate of between about 20 and about 30 liters per minute.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 32 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the pressure on the second side of the piston is maintained at a mean pressure of from about 3 to about 140 cm H 2 O.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 32 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the pressure on the second side of the piston is maintained at a mean pressure of from about 10 to about 30 cm H 2 O.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 31 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the gas supplied to the second side of the piston is supplied at a rate of from about 2 to about 20 liters per minute.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 26 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the piston is moved back and forth at a rate of from about 30 to about 12,000 times per minute.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 26 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the piston is moved back and forth at a rate of from about 30 to about 3000 times per minute.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 22 words
The method of claim 1 wherein an anesthetic gas is added to the flow of gas which is directed to the patient.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 40 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the source of the flow of gas supplied to the first side of the piston and the source of the flow of gas supplied to the second side of the piston are the same.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 41 words
The method of claim 1 wherein a coilform is mounted on the piston and the piston is moved back and forth in response to a polarized electrical signal having a selected frequency, amplitude and period which is applied to the coilform.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 30 words
The method of claim 13 wherein the flow of gas supplied to the first side of the piston passes out of the housing through the coilform, thereby cooling the coilform.
