Abstract

Abstract Several embodiments of outboard motors embodying four-cycle engines and improved lubricating systems therefor. In all of the embodiments, an oil reservoir is provided in the drive shaft housing and a combined screen and drain plug assembly filters the oil flowing from the oil reservoir to the engine lubricating system and for facilitating servicing of the screen by removal of the drain plug. In one embodiment, the oil reservoir is formed integrally with the drive shaft housing. A pressure relief valve depends into the oil reservoir and is carried by a plate that connects the engine to the drive shaft housing for facilitating servicing and reducing the likelihood of leakage back of oil to the engine when the outboard motor is tilted up. An improved relief valve screen assembly is also illustrated in one embodiment where in the screen may be bypassed if it becomes clogged.

Independent Claim 82 words
In an outboard motor having a power head containing an internal combustion engine, a drive shaft housing depending from said power head, said drive shaft housing having an outer wall enclosing a drive shaft driven by said engine and a lower unit depending from said drive shaft housing and containing propulsion means driven by said drive shaft, the improvement comprising an oil reservoir formed by upstanding walls formed integrally with said drive shaft housing outer wall for supplying lubricant to said engine.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 82 words
In an outboard motor having a power head containing an internal combustion engine, a drive shaft housing depending from said power head, said drive shaft housing having an outer wall enclosing a drive shaft driven by said engine and a lower unit depending from said drive shaft housing and containing propulsion means driven by said drive shaft, the improvement comprising an oil reservoir formed by upstanding walls formed integrally with said drive shaft housing outer wall for supplying lubricant to said engine.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 47 words
In an outboard motor as set forth in claim 1 further including a spacer plate interposed between the power head and drive shaft housing, said internal combustion engine being affixed to the upper side of said spacer plate and said spacer plate having an oil return passage.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 39 words
In an outboard motor as set forth in claim 2 further including relief valve means communicating with the pressure side of the engine lubricating system and affixed to the underside of said plate in communication with the oil reservoir.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 69 words
In an outboard motor as set forth in claim 1 further including an oil inlet pipe extending into the oil reservoir and having a screen at its lower end, the drive shaft housing outer wall having a drain opening for draining lubricant therefrom and drain plug means for closing the drain opening, said screen and said drain opening being related for removal of said screen through said drain opening.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 58 words
In an outboard motor as set forth in claim 4 further including a spacer plate interposed between the power head and drive shaft housing, said internal combustion engine being affixed to the upper side of said spacer plate and said spacer plate having an oil return passage extending therethroughfor returning oil from the engine to the oil reservoir.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 39 words
In an outboard motor as set forth in claim 5 further including relief valve means communicating with the pressure side of the engine lubricating system and affixed to the underside of said plate in communication with the oil reservoir.
