Abstract
Abstract A length of tape 3 is bonded to a heat shrinkable film 2, and the film 2 is weakened along the edges of a central portion of the length of tape 3. The film 2 is then wrapped around an article or articles, has its two opposite ends sealed together, and is heat shrunk around the article or articles causing access openings 6, 7 in the sheet in the weakened areas along the central portion of the tape that can then be used as a handle for the resultant package 1.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim
179 words
A method for packaging at least one article in heat shrinkable film while forming at least one handle for carrying the resultant package, said method comprising the steps of: bonding a length of tape along its entire length to a sheet of heat shrinkable material; weakening portions of the sheet along central portions of the longitudinal edges of the tape; wrapping the article in the sheet of heat shrinkable material with the bonded tape positioned on one of the exterior or interior of the sheet and the central portion of the tape at a location relative to the article at which the handle is desired; sealing two opposite ends of the sheet together; and heating the sealed sheet to a temperature sufficient to shrink the sheet onto the article after said weakening step so that openings are caused through the weakened portions of the sheet along the central portions of the tape which then provides the handle, which openings have substantial widths in directions normal to the longitudinal edges of the tape to afford easy access to the handle.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
75 words
A method according to claim 1 wherein said method further comprises providing a continuous strip of heat shrinkable material; bonding lengths of tape to the strip at spaced intervals to provide aid bonding step, weakening portions of the strip along each of the lengths of tape to provide said weakening step; and cutting away a portion of the strip including one of the lengths of tape for use in said wrapping, sealing and heating steps.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
18 words
A method according to claim 1 wherein said weakening step comprises perforating the sheet of heat shrinkable material.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
18 words
A method according to claim 1 wherein said weakening step comprises cutting the sheet of heat skrinkable material.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
18 words
A method according to claim 1 wherein said weakening step comprises thinning the sheet of heat shrinkable material.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
22 words
A method according to claim 1 wherein said bonding step comprises bonding the tape to the heat shrinkable sheet with an adhesive.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
35 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein said wrapping step further comprises defining a longitudinal axis of the article; and locating the tape at an oblique angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the article.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
31 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein said wrapping step further comprises defining a longitudinal axis of the article; and locating the tape transversely to the longitudinal axis of the article.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
47 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein the bonding step further comprises the step of bonding a second length of the tape along its entire length to the sheet of heat shrinkable material so as to intersect the first length of the tape bonded to the sheet.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
44 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein the bonding step further comprises the step of bonding a second length of the tape along its entire length to the sheet of heat shrinkable material parallel to the first length of tape bonded to the sheet.
