Abstract

Abstract Blood cells such as erythrocytes of animal origin are treated with a solution containing water, an organic cosolvent (such as dimethylsulfoxide, alone or admixed with a polyol), an aromatic polyaldehyde (such as phthaldialdehyde) and optionally salts and buffers. In an illustrative case, the treating solution is hypertonic and shrinks goat erythrocytes to the size of human platelets.
