Abstract
Abstract Tricarbocyanine polymeric dyes have formulae I and II: ##STR1## where Y can be ##STR2## --S--, --Se-- or --O--, A can be ##STR3## in which R 19 can be alkyl or --Cl, and p can be 0 or 1, R 6 and R 7 independently can be alkyl of (C 1 -C 30 ), preferably (C 1 -C 18 ), R 4 and R 5 independently can be --H, C 6 H 5 SO 2 --, or CF 3 SO 2 --, Z can be --SO 2 --, --CH 2 ) m , or vinylene, W can be I - , Br - , Cl - , ClO 4 - , PECHS - (polyethylcyclohexylsulfonate), F 3 CSO 3 - (trifluoromethanesulfonate), or other commonly used dye anions, m is an integer of 1 to 20, and n is an integer of 5 to 10,000.
