Abstract
Abstract A process comprising synthesizing a liquid crystal polyester consisting essentially of recurring moieties of formulas: <IMAGE> I. and <IMAGE> II. and moiety III or IV wherein III is <IMAGE> and IV is <IMAGE> wherein the mole ratio of moiety II to moiety III, when present, is 1:4 to 2:1 and wherein the mole ratio of moiety II to moiety IV, when present, is 2:8 to 1:9 and devolatilizing said liquid crystal polyester prior to shaping such polyester into an article and then shaping said devolatilized polyester into said article.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim
81 words
A process comprising synthesizing a liquid crystal polyester consisting essentially or recurring moieties of formulas: ##STR5## and moiety III or IV wherein III is ##STR6## wherein the mole ratio of moiety II to moiety III, when present, is 1:4 to 2:1 and wherein the mole ratio of moiety II to moiety IV, when present, is 2:8 to 1:9 and devolatilizing said liquid crystal polyester prior to shaping such polyester into an article and then shaping said devolatilized polyester into said article.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
44 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said synthesized polyester has an inherent viscosity of about 0.6 to about 1.2 dl per gram (at a concentration of about 0.5 grams per 100 ml of a solvent of equal volumes of trifluoroacetic acid and methylene chloride).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
27 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said devolatilization is affected by heating said synthesized polyester to effect a weight loss of at least about 0.8% by weight.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
17 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said shaping comprises molding said devolatilized polyester into a useful article.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
52 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said shaping comprises spinning said devolatilized polyester into fibers and winding said fibers onto a package and further including the step of heat treating the package in inert atmosphere to increase the tenacity of said fibers to form a rewindable package with substantially no interfiber sticking.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
45 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said devolatilizing step comprises heating said polyester while in particulate form to a temperature of at least about 220° C. and for a time of at least about four hours in an oven equipped with an inert gas purge.
