Abstract

Abstract A retaining wall system which provides an essentially a vertical wall without vertically aligned protrusions. The multitiered retaining wall system uses a plurality of tieback elements which act independently of each other to prevent the transference of forces and moments to lower tiers. The design provides a high degree of flexibility in the horizontal spacing of the tieback elements, which is independent of the width of the retaining wall panel, so as to meet specified technical conditions and allow the use of standard size prefabricated concrete components.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 206 words
A multitiered essentially vertical retaining wall system for retaining soil comprising: grade beam means disposed along a lowermost portion of said retaining wall system; wall panel means for retaining said soil in response to soil forces having vertical and horizontal components which are generated by said soil acting on said wall panel means, said wall panel means having a standardized predetermined height and width and vertically aligned along a predetermined plane; rigid tieback means disposed in said soil behind said wall panel means at intervals which vary in accordance with geotechnical conditions independently of said width of said wall panel means; coupling means horizontally disposed along upper and lower portions of said wall panel means for transferring said horizontal component of said soil forces acting on said wall panels to said tieback means to produce a moment on said tieback means which is resisted by soil forces acting on said tieback means causing said moment to be resolved into said soil to produce soil arching, said coupling means disposed to provide sufficient vertical space between said coupling means and said tieback means and said coupling means and said wall panel means to prevent transference of said moment to adjacent tiers of said multitiered retaining wall system.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 206 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 97 words
The retaining wall system of claim 2 wherein said tieback means comprises: web means having a surface area sufficiently large to engage a first block of soil adjacent said web means and cause integral movement of said first block of soil to ensure generation of shears between said first block of said soil and a second block of soil surrounding said first block of soil to cause soil arching; base flange means which extend transversely from said web means in a substantially horizontal direction to support said rigid tieback means and distribute said moment into said soil.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 19 words
The retaining wall system of claim 2 wherein said base member means is wedge shaped to resist pull-out forces.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 53 words
The retaining wall system of claim 2 wherein said tieback means further comprises: flange portion means aligned substantially transversely to said web means to provide a surface area for distributing horizontal forces generated between said tieback means and said coupling means and for maintaining engagement of said tieback means with said coupling means.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 91 words
The retaining wall system of claim 4 wherein said coupling means comprises: flat connector means horizontally disposed to extend between said wall panel means and said tieback means; first transverse portion means connected to said flat connector means for engaging said wall panel means along substantially vertically disposed surfaces; second transverse portion means connected to said flat connector means for engaging said tieback means along a substantially vertical surface and maintaining a space between horizontal surfaces to prevent transference of said moment to lower tiers of said multitiered retaining wall system.
