Alkyl substituted phenolphthalein polyarylate polymer and alloy

Claim 2

A polyarylate of the formula ##STR12## wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are independently lower alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms; n is the degree of polymerization; and wherein ##STR13## is an isophthalic or terephthalic acid moiety present in a molar ratio of 9:1 to 1:9, respectively.

Claim 3

The polyarylate according to claim 1, wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are methyl.

Claim 4

The polyarylate according to claim 1, wherein the molar ratio of the isophthalic to terephthalic acid moiety is about 3:1 to 1:3.

Claim 5

The polyarylate according to claim 3, wherein the molar ratio of the isophthalic to terephthalic acid moiety is about 1:1.

Claim 6

A polyarylate copolymer prepared by reacting (A) a mixture of a phenolphthalein compound of the formula ##STR14## wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are independently lower alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms; or a polyarylate-forming derivative thereof; and a bisphenol compound of the formula ##STR15## wherein R 5 , R 6 , R 7 and R 8 are independently hydrogen, lower alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms or phenyl; or a polyarylate-forming derivative thereof; and wherein the molar ratio of phenolphthalein to bisphenol is from 20:1 to 1:20; and (B) a mixture of isophthalic and terephthalic acid or polyarylate-forming derivatives thereof, in a molar ratio of 9:1 to 1:9, respectively.

Claim 7

A polyarylate copolymer prepared by reacting (A) a mixture of a phenolphthalein compound of the formula ##STR14## wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are independently lower alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms; or a polyarylate-forming derivative thereof; and a bisphenol compound of the formula ##STR15## wherein R 5 , R 6 , R 7 and R 8 are independently hydrogen, lower alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms or phenyl; or a polyarylate-forming derivative thereof; and wherein the molar ratio of phenolphthalein to bisphenol is from 20:1 to 1:20; and (B) a mixture of isophthalic and terephthalic acid or polyarylate-forming derivatives thereof, in a molar ratio of 9:1 to 1:9, respectively.

Claim 8

The copolymer according to claim 5, wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are methyl.

Claim 9

The copolymer according to claim 5, wherein R 5 , R 6 , R 7 and R 8 are hydrogen.

Claim 10

The copolymer according to claim 5, wherein R 5 , R 6 , R 7 and R 8 are independently lower alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms.

Claim 11

The copolymer according to claim 8, wherein R 5 , R 6 , R 7 and R 8 are methyl.

Claim 12

The copolymer according to claim 5, wherein the molar ratio of isophthalic to terephthalic acid is about 3:1 to 1:3.

Claim 13

The copolymer according to claim 10, wherein the molar ratio of isophthalic to terephthalic acid is about 1:1.

Claim 14

The copolymer according to claim 5, wherein the molar ratio of phenolphthalein to bisphenol is about 9:1 to 1:9.

Claim 15

The copolymer according to claim 12, wherein the molar ratio of phenolphthalein to bisphenol is about 4:1 to 1:4.

Claim 16

A polyarylate alloy composition comprising (A) 10 to 90% by weight of a polyarylate of the formula ##STR16## wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are independently hydrogen, lower alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms or phenyl; provided that R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 may not all be hydrogen; n is the degree of polymerization; and wherein ##STR17## is an isophthalic or terephthalic acid moiety present in a molar ratio of 9:1 to 1:9, respectively; and

A polyarylate alloy composition comprising (A) 10 to 90% by weight of a polyarylate of the formula ##STR16## wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are independently hydrogen, lower alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms or phenyl; provided that R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 may not all be hydrogen; n is the degree of polymerization; and wherein ##STR17## is an isophthalic or terephthalic acid moiety present in a molar ratio of 9:1 to 1:9, respectively; and

(B) 10 to 90% by weight of a polymer resin selected from the group consisting of polybisphenol A carbonate and polystyrene.

(B) 10 to 90% by weight of a polymer resin selected from the group consisting of polybisphenol A carbonate and polystyrene.

Claim 20

The composition according to claim 14, wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are independently lower alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms.

Claim 21

The composition according to claim 15, wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are methyl.

Claim 22

The composition according to claim 14, wherein the molar ratio of the isophthalic to terephthalic acid moiety is about 3:1 to 1:3.

Claim 23

The composition according to claim 17, wherein the molar ratio of the isophthalic to terephthalic acid moiety is about 1:1.

Claim 24

The composition according to claim 14, wherein component (B) is polybisphenol A carbonate.

Claim 25

The composition according to claim 14, wherein component (B) is polystyrene.

Claim 26

A polyarylate alloy composition comprising (A) 10 to 90% by weight of a polyarylate copolymer prepared by reacting (1) a mixture of a phenolphthalein compound of the formula ##STR18## wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are independently hydrogen, lower alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms or phenyl; provided that R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 may not all be hydrogen; or a polyarylate-forming derivative thereof; and a bisphenol compound of the formula ##STR19## wherein R 5 , R 6 , R 7 and R 8 are independently hydrogen, lower alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms or phenyl; or a polyarylate-forming derivative thereof; and wherein the molar ratio of phenolphthalein to bisphenol is from 20:1 to 1:20; and (2) a mixture of isophthalic and terephthalic acid or polyarylate-forming derivatives thereof, in a molar ratio of 9:1 to 1:9, respectively; and (B) 10 to 90% by weight of a polymer resin selected from the group consisting of polybisphenol A carbonate and polystyrene.

Claim 27

A polyarylate alloy composition comprising (A) 10 to 90% by weight of a polyarylate copolymer prepared by reacting (1) a mixture of a phenolphthalein compound of the formula ##STR18## wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are independently hydrogen, lower alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms or phenyl; provided that R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 may not all be hydrogen; or a polyarylate-forming derivative thereof; and a bisphenol compound of the formula ##STR19## wherein R 5 , R 6 , R 7 and R 8 are independently hydrogen, lower alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms or phenyl; or a polyarylate-forming derivative thereof; and wherein the molar ratio of phenolphthalein to bisphenol is from 20:1 to 1:20; and (2) a mixture of isophthalic and terephthalic acid or polyarylate-forming derivatives thereof, in a molar ratio of 9:1 to 1:9, respectively; and (B) 10 to 90% by weight of a polymer resin selected from the group consisting of polybisphenol A carbonate and polystyrene.

Claim 28

The composition according to claim 21, wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are independently lower alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms.

The composition according to claim 22, wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are methyl.

Claim 30

The composition according to claim 21, wherein R 5 , R 6 , R 7 and R 8 are hydrogen.

Claim 31

The composition according to claim 21, wherein R 5 , R 6 , R 7 and R 8 are independently lower alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms.

Claim 32

The composition according to claim 25, wherein R 5 , R 6 , R 7 and R 8 are methyl.

Claim 33

The composition according to claim 21, wherein the molar ratio of isophthalic to terephthalic acid is about 3:1 to 1:3.

Claim 34

The composition according to claim 27, wherein the molar ratio of isophthalic to terephthalic acid is about 1:1.

Claim 35

The composition according to claim 21, wherein the molar ratio of phenolphthalein to bisphenol is about 9:1 to 1:9.

Claim 36

The composition according to claim 29, wherein the molar ratio of phenolphthalein to bisphenol is about 4:1 to 1:4.

Claim 37

The composition according to claim 21, wherein component (B) is polybisphenol A carbonate.

Claim 38

The composition according to claim 21, wherein component (B) is polystyrene.
