Abstract

Abstract To produce image information from an object it is subjected to a continuous static magnetic field along a Z axis to sets of sequences of orthogonal gradients G x , G y and G z to the magnetic field. Spins in a selected plane (the X-Z plane) are excited by selective rf pulses and an associated G y gradient and the selected spins are subjected to all three gradients of which the G z gradient provides twist or warp to each column of spins extending along the Z axis to phase-encode the columns. The spin-echo signals are read out in the presence of a G x gradient. In each set of sequences a different value of Z gradient is employed. The Fourier transformed spin-echo signals obtained from each sequence, when arranged in order of increasing G z gradient and subjected to a second Fourier transform represent the distribution of spin density in the Z direction, thus giving a two-dimensional image of the selected X-Z plane.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 158 words
In a method of deriving image formation from an object using nuclear magnetic resonance signals the improvement comprising: subjecting an object to a continuous static magnetic field along an axis and carrying out a set of sequential steps which comprise: (1) exciting selected nuclear spins in said object; (2) applying a phase encoding gradient for phase encoding the said selected nuclear spins in the direction of the phase encoding gradient; (3) removing the phase encoding gradient and reading out the resultant free induction signal from the said object in the presence of a read gradient of the magnetic field having a gradient direction orthogonal to the phase encoding gradient; and then successively repeating the above set of sequential steps with different values of amplitude of the phase encoding gradient but with the phase encoding gradient being applied for equal times in each set of steps, there being a recovery interval between the repetition of successive sets of steps.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 158 words

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 34 words
The method as claimed in claim 1 in which step (1) comprises the selection of a plane of selected nuclear spins, the selected plane being parallel to the direction of the phase encoding gradient.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 45 words
The method as claimed in claim 2 in which rephasing of the selected nuclear spins in the selected plane in a direction parallel to the direction of the said plane selection gradient is achieved by applying the said plane selection gradient in the reverse direction.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 27 words
The method as claimed in claim 1 in which the selected nuclear spins are initially dephased in the direction of the read gradient prior to read out.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 43 words
The method as claimed in claim 1 in which a gradient in the opposite direction to the read gradient is applied prior to reading out the free induction signal in order to initially dephase the spins in the direction of the read gradient.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 32 words
The method as claimed in claim 2 and including a prior step of inverting the selected nuclear spins followed by an interval comparable with the spin-lattice relaxation time of the selected spins.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 25 words
The method as claimed in claim 6 in which the said prior step comprises selectively inverting the selected nuclear spins in the said selected plane.
