Abstract
Abstract An insulating coupling for drill collars and a method of manufacture thereof are presented wherein the coupling consists of an electrically insulating ceramic coating applied in thickness from 0.002 to 0.006 inch to the threads of the coupling by a detonation gun process and sealed with an epoxy sealer to reduce porosity.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim
128 words
A method for forming an electrically insulating coupling for a drill collar having first and second tubular drill collar segments with mating threaded sections, including the steps of: forming the threaded section of one of said drill collar segments of a reduced tubular wall thickness of from 0.002 to 0.006 inch relative to the desired finished dimension for threaded engagement with the mating threaded section of the other of said drill collar segments; applying an electrically insulating ceramic coating of from 0.002 to 0.006 inch to said threaded section of said one drill collar segment to obtain the desired final dimension; sealing the ceramic coating with a sealer effective to reduce porosity and then threading said first and second sections together to form an electrically insulated drill collar.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
25 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the step of applying a coating of ceramic material includes: applying the ceramic material by a detonation gun process.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
48 words
The method of claim 1 wherein said step of forming the threaded section of one of said drill collar segments of reduced tubular wall thickness includes: originally forming said threaded section of said one drill collar segment undersized by the thickness of the ceramic coating to be applied.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
25 words
The method of claim 3 wherein the step of applying a coating of ceramic material includes: applying the ceramic material by a detonation gun process.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
59 words
The method of claim 1 wherein said step of forming the threaded section of one of said drill collar segments of reduced tubular wall thickness includes: originally forming said threaded section to a first predetermined dimension; and removing from said threaded section a predetermined amount of material to reduce the thickness thereof to less than the final desired dimension.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
25 words
The method of claim 5 wherein the step of applying a coating of ceramic material includes: applying the ceramic material by a detonation gun process.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
66 words
The method of claim 1 wherein said step of forming the threaded section of one of said drill collar segments of reduced tubular wall thickness includes: originally forming said threaded section to approximately the final desired dimension thereof; and removing from said threaded section an amount of material equal to the thickness of coating of ceramic insulating material to be applied to said reduced threaded portion.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
25 words
The method of claim 7 wherein the step of applying a coating of ceramic material includes: applying the ceramic material by a detonation gun process.
