A method of automatically conducting permeability and porosity tests on a plurality of core samples, said method comprising the steps of: (a) manually loading a plurality of core samples into a carousel having a container for each of said core samples, (b) automatically positioning a first core sample in a first container of said carousel over a first piston, (c) automatically raising said first core sample out of said first container by pneumatically activating said first piston in response to the positioning of the first core sample over the piston, (d) automatically receiving said raised first core sample in a test chamber located directly above said first piston in response to the raising of the first core sample, (e) automatically sealing said raised first core sample in said test chamber with a predetermined stress applied by said first piston, (f) simultaneously and automatically applying at least one set of (1) an axial overburden stress with said first piston to the ends of said first core sample and (2) a radial stress with an elastic sleeve located in said chamber around the sides of said first core sample in order to simulate an overburden stress, (g) activating a second piston located internal to said first piston to maintain the seal over the lower end of said first core sample when conducting at least one said porosity test, (h) deactivating said second piston to open the lower end of said sealed core sample when conducting at least one said permeability test, (i) automatically lowering said first core sample from said test chamber upon completion of at least one set of said porosity and permeability tests conducted for at least one predetermined overburden stress, and automatically repeating steps (b) through (j) for each of the remaining loaded core samples by turning the carousel to position the next successive container over said piston.
