Abstract

Abstract A metal catalyst preferably comprised of a platinum/rhenium metal combination, supported on alumina is activated for the reforming of hydrocarbon feedstock, by being contacted with an oxygen-containing gas at a temperature sufficient to oxidize the metal catalyst and then being reduced sequentially by contacting the catalyst with a stream of hydrogen at about 650° to about 750° F. for a first period of time and then at about 900° to about 1000° F. for a second period of time, followed by sulfiding of the sequentially reduced catalyst. The sequential reduction procedure increases the selectivity of the reforming catalyst and results in increased C 5 + liquid product yields.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 114 words
A process for activating a metal catalyst, comprised of platinum and rhenium supported on a porous solid carrier, for reforming a hydrocarbon feedstock by contact of the feedstock with the activated catalyst at reforming conditions, the steps of activation comprising: (a) contacting the catalyst with an oxygen-containing gas at a temperature sufficient to oxidize the metal catalyst; (b) reducing the oxidized catalyst, sequentially, by first contacting the catalyst with a hydrogen containing gas at about 650° to about 750° F. for a first period of time, raising the temperature to about 900° to about 1000° F. and continuing the reduction in hydrogen for a second period of time; and (c) sulfiding the reduced catalyst.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 114 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 31 words
The process of claim 1 wherein the oxidation step is conducted by contacting the catalyst with air at about 900° to about 980° F. for about 2 to about 10 hours.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 28 words
The process of claim 1 wherein the first period of contact of the oxidized catalyst with the hydrogen contacting gas is from about 0.5 to about 2.0 hours.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 28 words
The process of claim 1 wherein the second period of contact of the oxidized catalyst with the hydrogen containing gas is from about 5.0 to about 15.0 hours.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 26 words
The process of claim 1 wherein the sulfiding step is conducted by contacting the catalyst with a sulfur-containing gas at a temperature below about 900° F.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 18 words
The process of claim 5 wherein the sulfiding step is conducted at about 750° to about 850° F.
