Abstract

Abstract Described is a method of producing silicone aqueous emulsion compositions which cure at room temperature by the removal of water to form elastomeric coatings or films with superior surface gloss, good adhesion to substrates, and rustproofness. The method prepares an emulsion of polydiorganosiloxane having at least two hydroxyl groups per molecule, colloidal silica or alkali metal silicate, curing catalyst, emulsifier, and water, the emulsion having a pH of from 9 to 12. After a period of ripening for a period of time, so that an elastomeric material will be formed when water is removed at room temperature, an amino-functional silane or its partial hydrolyzate is added to give the emulsion its improved properties.
