Abstract A liquid crystal composition comprising a mixed phase of the six kinds of the compounds such as ##STR1## and a liquid crystal display device of the multiplex drive type such as liquid crystal television device, which uses the above composition.

A liquid crystal composition comprising a mixed phase of at least one compound of the general formula: ##STR95## wherein R 1 is a saturated linear hydrocarbon group having 3 to 7 carbon atoms and R 2 is an ethoxy group, a propoxy group, or a butoxy group, at least one compound of the general formula: ##STR96## wherein R 3 is a saturated linear hydrocarbon group having 2 to 7 carbon atoms, at least one compound of the general formula: ##STR97## wherein R 4 is a saturated linear hydrocarbon group having 2 to 5 carbon atoms and R 5 is a saturated linear hydrocarbon group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, at least one compound of the general formula: ##STR98## wherein R 6 is an ethyl group or a group of the formula ##STR99## said compounds of the general formulas (A), (B), (C) and (D) being present in an amount totalling from 50-70 w/w%, at least one compound of the general formula: ##STR100## wherein R 7 is a saturated linear hydrocarbon group having 4 to 6 carbon atoms and R 8 is a saturated linear hydrocarbon group having 3 to 7 carbon atoms and being present in an amount of from 15-25 w/w%, and at least one compound of the general formula: ##STR101## wherein R 9 is a saturated linear hydrocarbon group having 4 to 8 carbon atoms and being present in an amount of from 15-25 w/w%.
