Abstract

Abstract A flat belting includes a plurality of individual layers of fabric that extend throughout the length and width of the belting. The layers are joined together by reinforcing elements which extend substantially in the direction of the thickness of the belting. The individual layers and reinforcing elements are encapsulated in a matrix of polymeric elastomeric resin, for example, polyvinylchloride. The individual layers are saturated with a liquid elastomer-forming polymeric resin prior to their being joined together. The reinforcing elements may be inserted, for example, by tufting, sewing, or stitch-bonding. One or more of the individual fabric layers may be a woven or other cloth having a plurality of substantially parallel yarns which extend in the lengthwise direction of the belting. One or more of the individual fabric layers may be a non-woven fabric.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 141 words
A method of manufacturing belting, comprising the following sequence of steps: (a) providing at least two individual layers of fabric, one of the fabric layers is a woven cloth and another is a non-woven fabric, (b) saturating the individual fabric layers with a liquid elastomer-forming polymeric resin, selected from the group consisting of polyvinylchloride and polyurethane, (c) pressing the saturated fabric layers together and removing the excess of liquid polymeric resin, (d) tensioning the fabric layers in a lengthwise direction an amount greater than that applied to them during saturation, (e) joining the saturated fabric layers while the resin is still liquid by a multiplicity of reinforcing elements which extend in a direction of the thickness of the fabric layers, (f) tensioning the joined fabric layers an amount greater than that applied to them during joining, (g) curing the polymeric resin
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 14 words
The method of claim 1, wherein the saturated fabric layers are joined by tufting.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 14 words
The method of claim 1, wherein the saturated fabric layers are joined by sewing.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 14 words
The method of claim 1, wherein the saturated fabric layers are joined by stitch-bonding.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 29 words
The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of the fabric layers is a woven cloth having warp cords which extend in the lengthwise direction of the belting.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 14 words
The method of claim 1, wherein the non-woven fabric layer is a stitch-bonded fabric.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 16 words
The method of claim 1, wherein the non-woven fabric layer is a needle-punched bat of fibers.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 16 words
The method of claim 1, wherein the non-woven fabric layer is an adhesive-bonded bat of fibers.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 44 words
The method of claim 1, further comprising, after tensioning the joined fabric layers, (a) solidifying the resin saturant, (b) applying a cover layer of liquid polymeric resin, (c) solidifying the cover layer of liquid polymeric resin, (d) curing the resin saturant and cover layer.
