Abstract

Abstract Sulfoalkylating agents free from sultones may be obtained by heating hydroxy alkane sulfonic acids of propane or butane or the corresponding sultones having 5 or 6 ring members with up to four times the molar quantity of water to a temperature in the region of from 80° to 180° C. The sulfoalkylating agents are believed to be the "dimeric esters" of the hydroxy alkane sulfonic acids.
