Abstract
Abstract A data processing system using separate fixed point and floating point computation units and a single control store means for controlling the operations of both units, the units being responsive to commonly shared control fields of the microinstructions supplied from the control store means during their respective operations. The floating point unit can provide single or double precision results, an additional control field of the microinstructions identifying which result is required.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
153 words
In a data processing system requiring fixed point and floating point computation operations an arithmetic computation unit for providing fixed point arithmetic computations, a floating point computation unit operating independently and in time synchronism with said arithmetic computation unit comprising an exponent computation unit and a mantissa computation unit for providing floating point arithmetic computations for data words having a first or a second selected number of bits, a single control store means for supplying microinstructions for controlling the operations of both said arithmetic computation unit and said floating point computation unit, both said computation units being responsive to a plurality of commonly shared control fields of said microinstructions during their respective operations, said floating point computation unit being further responsive to an additional control field of said microinstructions for identifying whether said floating point computation unit is operating on data words of said first or said second selected number of data bits.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
48 words
In a data processing system in accordance with claim 1 wherein said first selected number of bits is 32 bits for providing a 24 bit floating point mantissa result and said second selected number of bits is 64 bits for providing a 56 bit floating point mantissa result.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
84 words
In a data processing system in accordance with claim 2 wherein said additional control field identifies a 32 bit operation, said field controls the operation of said floating point computation unit in a manner such that the operands of the computation used for the first 24 bits of said floating point words are controlled by a microinstruction from said control store and further including means responsive to said additional control field for setting the remaining 40 bits of said floating point words to zero.
