Abstract

Abstract An improved test means, device and method for determining the ionic strength or specific gravity of an aqueous sample are disclosed. The test means comprises a weakly basic polyelectrolyte polymer salt and an indicator means capable of producing a detectable response to ion exchange between the polymer salt and the test sample. The polymer salt is one in which one or more of the basic moieties of the polymer is present as the salt of a strong organic acid.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 69 words
In a test means for determining the ionic strength or specific gravity of an aqueous test sample, wherein the test means comprises a weakly basic polyelectrolyte polymer, and an indicator means capable of producing a detectable response to ion exchange between said polyelectrolyte and said sample; the improvement wherein 20 to 60% of the basic moieties of said polyelectrolyte is present as a salt of a strong organic acid.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 69 words
In a test means for determining the ionic strength or specific gravity of an aqueous test sample, wherein the test means comprises a weakly basic polyelectrolyte polymer, and an indicator means capable of producing a detectable response to ion exchange between said polyelectrolyte and said sample; the improvement wherein 20 to 60% of the basic moieties of said polyelectrolyte is present as a salt of a strong organic acid.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 28 words
The improved test means of claim 1 in which about 50% of the basic moieties of said polymer are in the form of a salt of said acid.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 18 words
The improved test means of claim 1 in which the polyelectrolyte is poly(ethyleneimine), poly(vinylamine), poly(aminostyrene) or copolymers thereof.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 13 words
The improved test means of claim 1 in which the polyelectrolyte is poly(ethyleneimine).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 25 words
The improved test means of claim 1 in which the acid has an acidity constant, K a , of at least about 1×10 -2 .
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 17 words
The improved test means of claim 1 in which the acid is benzenesulfonic acid or trichloroacetic acid.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 20 words
The improved test means of any one of claims 1-6 in which the indicator means is a pH indicator substance.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 15 words
The improved test means of claim 7 in which the pH means is bromothymol blue.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 30 words
A test device for determining the ionic strength or specific gravity of an aqueous test sample, the device comprising a carrier matrix incorporated with the test means of claim 7.
Claim 11
Independent Claim 35 words
A method for determining the ionic strength or specific gravity of an aqueous test sample, the method comprising contacting the sample with the test means any one of claims 1-6 and observing a detectable response.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 33 words
A method for determining the ionic strength or specific gravity of an aqueous test sample, the method comprising contacting the sample with the test device of claim 9 and observing a detectable response.
Claim 13
Independent Claim 72 words
A method for preparing a test device for determining the ionic strength or specific gravity of an aqueous test sample, the method comprising the steps of reacting a weakly basic polyelectrolyte polymer with sufficient strong organic acid to form a salt of about 20 to 60% of the basic moieties of the polyelectrolyte, thereby forming a polyelectrolyte salt, and incorporating a carrier matrix with the polyelectrolyte salt and a pH indicator substance.
Claim 14
Independent Claim 72 words
A method for preparing a test device for determining the ionic strength or specific gravity of an aqueous test sample, the method comprising the steps of reacting a weakly basic polyelectrolyte polymer with sufficient strong organic acid to form a salt of about 20 to 60% of the basic moieties of the polyelectrolyte, thereby forming a polyelectrolyte salt, and incorporating a carrier matrix with the polyelectrolyte salt and a pH indicator substance.
