Abstract 4-Fluorobiphenyl derivatives of the formula (I) ##STR1## wherein X is --CO--O-- or --O--CO--; Z is 1,4-phenylene or 1,4-cyclohexylene; and R is alkyl, alkoxy or alkanoyloxy, each of 1 to 8 atoms, are valuable components of liquid-crystalline dielectrics for electro-optical applications.
