Abstract

Abstract An apparatus for electrically controlling the spark advance of selected cylinders of a multicylinder engine so that the spark of the selected cylinders is advanced beyond others of the cylinders. For example, the selected cylinders may be advanced beyond normal operational advance to increase combustion chamber temperatures and pressures for a relatively short period so as to clean the surfaces of the combustion chamber. The cylinders which are advanced are changed in sequence or at random so that all of the cylinders are cleaned. The system may also be used to control the spark advance of the cylinders to provide differing advances for the respective cylinders to accommodate differences in operational conditions at the cylinders.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 178 words
For an engine having wall means defining a plurality of combustion chambers and ignition means associated with said combustion chambers for igniting successive charges therein in response to an ignition signal, a system for controlling the combustion of said charges in said combustion chambers comprising; detecting means for detecting predetermined vibrations arising from the combustion of charges in said combustion chambers and for providing an output signal representative thereof; control means for controlling the combustion of said charges in accordance with said output signal, but depending upon whether said output signal occurs during a mutually-exclusive predetermined interval with respect to selected ones of said combustion chambers, said control means being responsive to said ignition signal for establishing said predetermined interval so that said predetermined interval begins in response to the ignition of the charge in a selected one of said combustion chambers and ends at least by the ignition of the charge in the next of said combustion chambers in which a charge is ignited whereby each predetermined interval is mutually-exclusive with respect to all other predetermined intervals.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 178 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 26 words
The ignition means of claim 1 wherein said one interval begins in response to the ignition of said charge in said chamber by said ignition means.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 36 words
The system of claim 2 wherein said predetermined interval ends a predetermined period after ignition of said charge in said chamber and prior to the ignition of the charge in the next of said combustion chambers.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 29 words
The ignition means of claim 1 wherein said one interval begins upon ignition of said charge in said chamber by said ignition means and ends a predetermined period thereafter.
