Claim 1
Independent Claim 64 words
A method for improving the wettability and hydrophilicity of the surface of an inorganic substrate comprising applying to a surface of said substrate a first layer formed by the reaction of an alkane in the presence of a low pressure glow discharge, and a top layer formed by the reaction of a polar organic compound in the presence of a low pressure glow discharge.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 64 words
A method for improving the wettability and hydrophilicity of the surface of an inorganic substrate comprising applying to a surface of said substrate a first layer formed by the reaction of an alkane in the presence of a low pressure glow discharge, and a top layer formed by the reaction of a polar organic compound in the presence of a low pressure glow discharge.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 15 words
The method of claim 1 wherein said alkane is a C 1 -C 6 hydrocarbon.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 10 words
The method of claim 1 wherein said alkane is methane.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 23 words
The method of claim 1 wherein said polar organic compound is an organic compound containing a polar group and an ethylenic double bond.

Claim 9
Independent Claim 115 words
A method for improving the wettability and hydrophilicity of the surface of an inorganic substrate selected from the group consisting of glass and aluminum, comprising first exposing at least one surface of said substrate to a low pressure glow discharge in the presence of a vapor of a C 1 -C 6 alkane hydrocarbon, then exposing said substrate to a low pressure glow discharge in the presence of a vapor of a polar organic compound, said exposures to low pressure glow discharge being carried out at a temperature in the range of from about 10° C. to about 40° C. and at a pressure in the range of from about 0.1 to about 1.0 Torr.
