Abstract

Abstract Laminar batteries of series connected cells comprising lithium anodes and an electrolyte containing a passivating solvent reactive with lithium in which the cells are electrically connected in series by intercell barriers comprising outer layers of electrochemically inert electronically conducting material in contact with the electrochemically active anode and cathode of adjacent cells and a layer of metal foil between the electrochemically inert layers.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 217 words
A laminar multicell lithium battery, comprising, in combination, a plurality of stacked contiguous laminar cells; each cell comprising a lithium anode, a cathode comprising a slurry dispersion of active cathode particles in an organic solution of a lithium salt containing a passivating solvent, and an electrolyte permeable separator between said anode and said cathode; each adjacent pair of cells being electronically connected in series and electrochemically isolated only by a laminar intercell connector; each of said laminar intercell connectors consisting essentially of a first layer of conductive plastic having one side in contact with the cathode of a first of said adjacent pair of cells and a second side opposite said first side, an electronically conducting barrier layer of material impermeable to said passivating solvent adhered on one side to said second side of said first layer of conductive plastic and having a second side, said barrier layer being in registry with said cathode and being at least coextensive with the area of said cathode in contact with said first layer to substantially prevent passage of said passivating solvent, and a second layer of conductive plastic adhered to said second side of said barrier layer on one side and having an opposite side in contact with the anode of the other of said adjacent pair of cells.
