Abstract
Abstract An electrophotographic copying apparatus includes a photosensitive surface capable of retaining an electrostatic latent image for at least two cycles of the surface so a first copy of an original can be made upon scanning the original and the latent image can be recycled to produce a second copy of the same original during the return of the scanning mechanism. The apparatus includes an improved mechanism for driving the scanning mechanism, as well as improved developing and transfer stations.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 15
Claim 1
Independent Claim
158 words
An electrophotographic copying apparatus including a photosensitive surface movable cyclically past a plurality of processing stations and adapted to retain for at least two cycles thereof an electrostatic latent image formed on said photosensitive surface by exposing charged portions of said surface to a light image of an orignal, said stations including a developing station having means for applying a developing powder to said latent image to form a powder image of said original and a transfer station for bringing a copy sheet into registry with said powder image for transferring said powder image thereto, said transfer station including a roller adapted to rotate adjacent said surface in synchronism therewith and including holes extending inwardly to pressure means forming a low pressure on the surface of said roller for holding a copy sheet thereto to bring it into contact with said powder image and later forming a higher pressure on said roller surface for releasing said copy sheet.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
69 words
An apparatus according to claim 1, said pressure means including a first chamber connectible to a source of low pressure and formed interiorly of said roller to extend beneath the path of travel of a copy sheet held thereby, and a second chamber located adjacent the end of said first chamber located downstream of said path of travel, said second chamber being connectible to a source of higher pressure.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
104 words
An apparatus according to claim 1, said pressure means including an inner wall held along the inner surface of the outer wall of said roller, and a cam follower held to said inner wall and extending to a cam surface operable to move said cam follower away from the outer wall of said roller when said copy sheet registers with said holes to increase the space between said inner wall and the outer wall of said roller and create said low pressure, and to allow said cam follower to move back towards said outer wall to decrease said space to create said higher pressure.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
18 words
An apparatus according to claim 3, said space increasing as the copy sheet is transported by said roller.
Claim 6
Independent Claim
55 words
An apparatus according to claims 3, said inner wall being formed of a resilient material and having one one held to the outer wall of said roller, said cam follower being held to the other end of said inner wall, and further including an extensible member held between said other end and said outer wall.
Claim 7
Independent Claim
22 words
An apparatus according to either of claims 2 or 3, said holes being of a diameter no larger than approximately 1/8 in.
Claim 8
Independent Claim
25 words
An apparatus according to either claims 2 or 3, said roller having a resistivity of between 10 6 Ω cm and 10 10 Ω cm.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
25 words
An apparatus according to claim 7, means for applying a potential to said roller to assist transfer of said developing powder to said copy sheet.
Claim 10
Independent Claim
63 words
An apparatus for transferring a sheet of paper from one position to another, including a roller having holes extending inwardly, and means communicating with said holes for forming a low pressure on the surface of said roller for holding said sheet thereto to bring it to said other position and then forming a higher pressure on said roller surface for releasing said sheet.
Claim 11
Independent Claim
63 words
An apparatus for transferring a sheet of paper from one position to another, including a roller having holes extending inwardly, and means communicating with said holes for forming a low pressure on the surface of said roller for holding said sheet thereto to bring it to said other position and then forming a higher pressure on said roller surface for releasing said sheet.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
67 words
An apparatus according to claim 9, said pressure means including a first chamber connectible to a source of low pressure and formed interiorly of said roller to extend beneath the path of travel of said sheet held thereby, and second compartment located adjacent the end of said first compartment located downstream of said path of travel, said second chamber being connectible to a source of higher pressure.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
95 words
An apparatus according to claim 9, said pressure means including an inner wall held along the inner surface of the wall of said roller, and a cam follower held to said inner wall and extending to a cam surface operable to move said cam follower away from the outer wall of said roller when said sheet registers with said holes to increase the space between said inner wall of said roller and create said low pressure, and to allow said cam follower to move back towards said outer wall to decrease said said higher pressure.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim
17 words
An apparatus according to claim 11, said space increasing as said sheet is transported by said roller.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim
55 words
An apparatus according to claim 11, said inner wall being formed of a resilient material and having one end held to the outer wall of said roller, said cam follower being held to the other end of said inner wall, and further including an extensible member held between said other end and said outer wall.
